Fertility Preservation through egg freezing allows younger women to store eggs for use when they are older thus providing women today even more control over when they choose to start a family. This technology holds great promise for women of reproductive age and to date there are over 1,000 births worldwide as a result of egg freezing.
The process involves stimulating eggs within a woman’s ovaries and bringing those eggs to maturity through the use of medication. IRMS then harvests and freezes those eggs for future use. Egg quality has proven to be better the younger women are and IRMS believes most ideal for the majority of women between the ages of 30–39.
To date, IRMS has performed 20 egg thaws and 18 transfers. The clinical pregnancy rate (fetal heart rate upon ultrasound) is 45% (with the national average at 25%). The ongoing or delivered pregnancy rate is 35%.
An egg freezing cycle requires a woman to undergo the stimulation of her ovaries through the use of fertility medications for about 2 weeks so that IRMS can harvest as many mature eggs as possible. Preparation and timing for this cycle is usually determined by the last normal menstrual period of the patient; the easiest patients to schedule however are those who are already on oral contraceptives since we can stop them at any time to start medications for an egg freezing cycle. On average, this cycle can be completed within 3–5 weeks from initial consultation.
We know that pursuing egg freezing for fertility preservation is a big decision for many women and IRMS seeks to make the process as comfortable and easy as possible. IRMS has a staff dedicated to our egg freezing program to assure our patients that they are properly informed, counseled and supported.
