Jill Fischer, M.S.

Genetics (PGD) Counselor

As genetic counselor for IRMS, Jill Fischer, MS, coordinates the preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) program and serves as genetic counselor for the PGD, IVF and infertility programs.

Ms. Fischer, board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling, received her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and her graduate degree from the University of South Carolina Medical School, where she received the Most Outstanding Genetic Counselor. This training and her interest in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) and PGD has led her to develop a role for the genetic counselor in these areas.

Ms. Fischer has lectured and organized workshops and seminars on the topics of genetics, ART and PGD in the U.S. and Canada. She has completed and participated in graduate thesis work regarding genetic counselors’ knowledge of ART, ART nurses’ knowledge of genetics and the marketing of genetic counselors’ services to ART providers. Until 1995, Ms. Fischer was the genetic counselor for the PGD, IVF and infertility programs of the Jones Institute for Women’s Health while serving as a faculty member in the Department of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the Eastern Virginia Medical School. In 1996, Ms. Fischer founded and chaired the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) Assisted Reproductive Technologies and Infertility Special Interest Group of which she is currently a member. In 2000, Ms. Fischer was co-chair of the NSGC Annual Education Conference Short Course on the genetics of infertility. In addition to her experience in ART and PGD, Ms. Fischer has served as genetic counselor for prenatal patients since 1993 and has 5 years experience in pediatric genetics. Ms. Fischer has particular interest in education and therefore has lectured to and acted as supervisor to graduate and medical students and residents.

Ms. Fischer has served as a member of the NSGC Board of Directors, as NSGC Education Committee Chair and member, as NSGC liaison to the National Coalition for Health Professional Education in Genetics, and on various other NSGC committees. Her professional affiliations include the National Society of Genetic Counselors, the American Board of Genetic Counseling and the American Society of Human Genetics.
