The IRMS Egg Donor Program allows individuals and couples the opportunity to have the family they desire. IRMS has partnerships with two frozen donor egg banks to provide our patients with the largest possible selection of donors from which to choose the one best for their family building journey. What this means to eligible Intended Parents is they have the opportunity to choose from donors from all over the U.S.
The process can start as soon as the eligible recipient’s screening and eligibility criteria are met. The cycle can start as soon as the frozen eggs are shipped to IRMS and the recipient is ready to start. Most importantly, the reported clinical pregnancy rates are comparable to the rates when using fresh donor eggs.
When is an Egg Donor Needed?
Egg donation can be an appropriate option for women who are unable to produce viable eggs or who have chromosomal defects that make natural conception dangerous or undesirable. The underlying problem may include premature ovarian failure or the loss of ovarian function due to surgery or chemotherapy used in cancer treatment. Some women do not effectively respond to medication or have poor egg quality due to age or diminished ovarian reserve. Women with these or other fertility problems are often excellent candidates for egg donation. Egg donation is also required for same-sex male couples looking to use a gestational carrier.

Known Egg Donor
On occasion, a recipient feels comfortable knowing their donor and as such may ask to have a known candidate evaluated for consideration of their donor status. This evaluation consists of the same process in which we evaluate any other donor candidate: the medical exam with ultrasound and blood work, psychological evaluation with testing and a nursing orientation. Different from the confidential donor evaluation, in the known donor evaluation, the process is geared towards learning and understanding all the additional social issues involved. In addition to the above, known donor arrangements require the donor’s partner to come in for a meeting with the mental health professional as well as a meeting with all parties to discuss individual understandings and expectations. We believe that discussing the issues involved with known donation with an outside party will ensure the integrity of the existing relationships, even when siblings are involved.
A legal agreement between all parties with legal representation for both parties is required in a known donor arrangement. Because of the specialized and specific nature of this agreement, IRMS recommends parties enlist the services of Reproductive Attorneys. Referrals can be provided upon request.
Agency Egg Donors
At IRMS we work with several fully vetted Donor Egg Agencies in New Jersey, New York and across the USA. We recommend you take the following important information into account when working with an agency to find your donor.
- All donor egg agencies have different policies and may differ in cost so it is important to do your research with any agency you are considering.
- Most donor egg agencies do not have medical professionals working for them so they cannot answer any medically related questions.
- Most donor egg agencies do not have their donors psychologically screened prior to being placed in their database. This is an important point to clarify when looking to work with an agency. Psychological screening must be done properly to be valid and IRMS does not accept psychological screening done outside our institution.
- If a donor has donated previously, it is helpful for us to get the relevant embryology information from their previous cycle(s). Previous records may be reviewed by our staff, but will not be accepted as a substitute for our screening process.
- We feel that our stringent screening process is an important component of our successful pregnancy rates. While our procedures may at times seem lengthy, they have been developed with your safety and success in mind.
- The donor egg agency is there to assist you with the donor’s travel arrangements, as well as the scheduling of her initial appointment at IRMS.
Once you have selected an egg donor from an agency the donor must work with IRMS and:
1. Complete a new patient video conference call with one of our IRMS physicians.
2. Meet with the Third Party Team to complete Donor Orientation.
3. Meet with one of our preferred Mental Health Professionals for psychological evaluation.
4. Have her day 3 labs drawn (FSH, LH, E2) prior to cycle start.
5. We will not order any testing upon the donor until she is seen by an IRMS physician.
6. Have all of her screening done at IRMS. It should take 3-4 weeks for all results to come back and to be reviewed by the medical staff (abnormal labs may require longer for follow up and resolution). Genetic testing can take up to 14-21 business days to come back as well.
7. Sign consents.
8. IRMS is in charge of all cycle schedules and medical care for your donor, once our staff have seen her.
9. During the cycle, the donor must be seen by an outside office for blood work and ultrasounds only; they will not dictate the medical plan. If the donor is local to our office locations, they can be monitored with us at an additional cost.
10. Typical rejection rates for donors obtained via the agencies listed are around 10%.
11. All couples using agency donors, or using known donors, must execute a legal agreement between themselves and the donor with separate legal representation for both parties. IRMS can assist with referrals to lawyers with experience in reproductive law. We are not party to the agreement but require documentation that the agreement has been executed appropriately.
- We will not set you up for cycle until all of your screening, as well as, the donor’s screening, has been completed, received in our office and reviewed by the Donor Team.
- Our finance department must financially clear you before we can provide you and your donor with a schedule.
- Make sure your medical checklist is completed to avoid delays in cycling.
- A member of our Donor Team will order your donor medications and dispense the medications to your donor before the cycle starts.
