IRMS applauds NJ Governor & NJ State legislature for expansion of infertility insurance coverage

On May 1, 2017 NJ Governor Chris Christie signed into law legislation improving insurance requirements for infertility coverage expanding who is eligible to receive coverage.

What a great day for fertility rights in New Jersey! Our very own Serena Chen, M.D. states “It is so exciting that the work that we have been doing along with ASRM and Resolve to improve access to care and access to IVF has come to fruition in New Jersey. We still have a long way to go but this update to the current law removes much of the discrimination in the old law and will improve health equity and access for many people who want families in New Jersey. We need to continue this work because many people in the U.S. who want children and need IVF and assisted reproduction to conceive safely still do not have good coverage or access.”

What the expansion means:

The existing statute required insurance providers that cover at least 50 people and provide pregnancy-related benefits to pay for infertility diagnosis and treatment. It defined infertility as a disease or condition that results in the abnormal function of the reproductive system such that: a male is unable to impregnate a female; a female under 35 years of age is unable to conceive after 2 years of unprotected sex; a female 35 years of age and over is unable to conceive after one year of unprotected sexual intercourse; the male or female is medically sterile; or the female is unable to carry a pregnancy to live birth.

The new statute updates the definition of infertility to “a disease or condition that results in the abnormal function of the reproductive system, as determined pursuant to ASRM guidelines (American Society for Reproductive Medicine) or by a physician who is Board Certified or Board Eligible in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility or in Obstetrics and Gynecology; or that the patient has met one of the following conditions:

  1. A male is unable to impregnate a female;
  2. A female with a male partner and under 35 years of age is unable to conceive after 12 months of unprotected sexual intercourse;
  3. A female with a male partner and 35 years of age and over is unable to conceive after 6 months of unprotected sexual intercourse;
  4. A female without a male partner and under 35 years of age who is unable to conceive after 12 failed attempts of IUI (intrauterine insemination) under medical supervision;
  5. A female without a male partner and over 35 years of age who is unable to conceive after 6 failed attempts of IUI under medical supervision;
  6. Partners are unable to conceive as a result of involuntary medical sterility;
  7. A person is unable to carry a pregnancy to live birth; or
  8. A previous determination of infertility pursuant to the law.”

These provisions of the new law are effective 90 days after enactment.

Additionally, the new law requires health plans contracting to cover state employees and teachers to include the same fertility coverage, effective immediately, and applies its provisions to contracts that are in force or that are issued or renewed after May 1, 2017.

These important changes mean not only that the new law falls in line with the medical definition of infertility, but that women with same sex partners and women without partners can now qualify for fertility coverage.

Here at IRMS we applaud these changes! For years, we’ve been working diligently alongside our colleagues in the fertility community to demand greater Access to Care. We are extremely excited and proud of this great step forward in protecting fertility rights for all of us that live in New Jersey and want to grow our families.

Dr. Jessica Salas Mann, M.D. Opens New Office in Old Bridge, NJ

Jessica Salas Mann

It is with great pleasure that I announce the opening of my new office. As a way to stay true to my calling of providing only the best options for my patients, I have opened JSM Fertility, an affiliate of IRMS.

The journey through fertility can be stressful. The goal of this practice is to provide a comfortable setting where patients are treated with empathy and are given the necessary attention, respect, and support they deserve. My training, certifications, and years of experience have allowed me to design a practice where patients can feel at ease to discuss any questions about their care. As a woman, I want my patients to understand their bodies. It is important to teach our patients and guide them in making decisions. I firmly believe that no one should undergo any kind of treatment without a discussion of all their viable options. These options vary from person to person.

Fertility care is not about following strict algorithms; it is as much art as it is medicine. In our field, old paradigms are challenged at times. We learn and update ourselves constantly. While some aspects of medicine have stayed the same for many years, the current approach to infertility focuses on efficiency and shorter times to conception and live birth. Being affiliated with IRMS allows my practice to have access to a team of scientists who continue to stay at the forefront of research in the field of reproductive endocrinology. I welcome all patients to my practice, where patients represent the core of our existence.

IRMS NJ Offering IVF Discounts to Veteran’s

We wouldn’t enjoy the many freedoms that we do today if it wasn’t for all of the brave men and women who have fought for our country. But for some unknown reason the Veteran’s Administration is prohibited under federal law from providing IVF services to the patients it serves. For this reason IRMS is proud to be able to assist our vets by joining the “Service to Veterans” Program co-created by ASRM (American Society for Reproductive Medicine) and SART (Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology).

Under this new program, US Veterans with service related injuries will be able to receive discounted IVF and related services. IRMS has decided to provide a 50% discount for services provided. Please call (973) 322-8286 for more info about the “Service to Veterans” Program or to schedule an appointment.

IRMS Offering Patient Support Groups

Research on support groups for medical conditions have shown to be useful and effective in helping patients cope with treatment they are facing. Finding support when dealing with infertility is important, but not always easy. Friends and family can provide some support, but even the very best of friends can’t truly understand what you are going through without having experienced infertility personally. A support group can provide a place where one can meet and speak with people who understand.

Infertility is hard. You needn’t go this journey alone.

IRMS is sponsoring several upcoming support groups ranging from information and education about infertility coping strategies, general infertility, pregnancy after infertility and dealing with miscarriage. This is the beginning of a new program to educate, arm and support patients in this journey. Plans to include not only emotional support groups but also an educational learning series devoted to the process.

Please download our flyer for more information including how to participate.

IRMS is partnering with Reprogenetics in the launch of a Next Generation Sequencing study trial.

Livingston, NJ: IRMS and Reprogenetics have launched an SET NGS study trial (SET = Single Embryo Transfer; NGS = Next Generation Sequencing). This is the only study of it’s kind with a focus on Single Embryo Transfer (SET) which has become one of the most important initiatives in reproductive medicine over the past two years – one healthy baby at a time.

Reprogenetics, led by Oxford Professor, Dr Dagan Wells is responsible for the first ever birth after NGS (Next Generation Sequencing). This groundbreaking platform promises to make genetic analysis of preimplantation embryos more accurate and accessible to patients struggling with miscarriage and infertility. IRMS Study Director, Dr Stephanie Marshall Thompson states “this is an incredible opportunity for our patients that need preimplantation genetic screening of their embryos but lack insurance coverage for this high tech procedure.” IRMS Division Director, Dr Serena H. Chen remarks that “we are profoundly fortunate to be working with Dr Dagan Wells, Dr Santiago Munne and Dr Allen Kung – true leaders in the field of preimplantation genetic screening of embryos. To couple genetic screening with a single embryo transfer is a win-win for not only our patients but the healthcare system in general. Since multiple pregnancy can increase the risks for birth defects and miscarriages, SET or Single Embryo Transfer combined with NGS offers these high risk patients the best opportunity for one healthy baby at a time.”
